Frequently Asked Questions

  • Extra virgin olive oil is high in polyphenols, which are a type of antioxidant that can help fight inflammation and may lower the risk of diseases, like heart disease and cancer. Olive oil also contains monounsaturated fatty acids such as oleic acid, which can help lower LDL cholesterol - often called “bad cholesterol”. Extra virgin olive oil also contains a good amount of vitamin E, which is an essential nutrient that doubles as an antioxidant.

  • We recommend using your olive oil within 18-24 months of the harvest date (written on the back of each Birch Creek Olive Orchards bottle). The harvest date refers to when the olives were picked and milled. Bottles should be kept in a dry, dark cabinet, and not near your range or cooktop where it can overheat and change the flavor. Our olive oil is bottled in dark-colored bottles which helps to prevent exposure to light.

  • Do not fret! Your olive oil is safe to use, and it has not gone bad. Olive oil can turn “cloudy”, usually towards the bottom of the bottle, when it is exposed to cold temperatures. Perhaps the bottle got too cold when it was shipped to you, or it’s being stored in your cold pantry in the winter. The cloudiness comes from the natural fats and waxes in the oil solidifying. It is usually temporary, and your olive oil should return to normal at room temperature. This is a natural process and will not change or harm the flavor.

  • The Estate Blend contains a varietal combination of Spanish olives; Hojiblanca, Picual and Arbequina. The Italian Blend combines Frantoio, Coratina and Pendolino olive varietals. All of our olives are grown on our trees at Birch Creek Olive Orchards in Livermore, California.

  • Both of our award-winning extra virgin olive oil blends are of the highest quality and taste great, with medium fruitiness. Our Estate Blend is the perfect everyday olive oil, the flavor is grassy, fruity and peppery. Using our Estate Blend in your cooking will add depth and richness to your dishes, and we recommend it for grilling and roasting, in stews and sauces, even in marinades and dressings.

Our Italian Blend has a rich fruity flavor, it’s incredibly smooth, herbaceous and well-rounded. Use our Italian Blend in Italian classics like pizza, pasta and bruschetta, or drizzled on salads, seafood, grilled vegetables or meats.

Both of our olive oil blends work perfectly as a dip for bread, a great simple way to really showcase the flavors.

Remember, if you can’t choose between our two extra virgin olive oils, we sell a lovely gift pack that includes a bottle each of both our Estate Blend and our Italian Blend.

  • We are members of the California Olive Oil Council (COOC), a trade association committed to upholding the highest standards within the olive oil industry. Look for the California Olive Oil Council Certified Extra Virgin seal on the back of our bottles.
